Urban forestry is the careful care and management of tree populations in urban settings for the purpose of improving the urban environment. With the pressure to create sustainable municipalities, the value of trees and shrubs in an urban environ has once again come to the forefront. As urban foresters, For Trees plant and maintain trees, support appropriate tree and forest preservation, conduct research and promote the many benefits trees provide. Directors of Planning and Development, Community Services, and Public Works are invited to contact us at 403-335-8965.
In the winter of 2008 and spring of 2009, For Trees Company worked in Banff, continuing with what we began in the summer: inventoried, assessed for safety, and valuated the Urban Forest in Banff, Alberta. This led to the writing of the 2008 Banff Urban Forest Management Plan, a joint publication with Tesera Systems, a forestry consulting company from Cochrane.
In Banff National Park, For Trees Company was contracted to remove dead trees in many municipal environmental reserves the Town is responsible for, including pruning deadwood around the Bow Falls parking lot area.
For Trees has also done recent projects in Urban Forestry, both with Tree Canada, and on our own. For example, with Tree Canada, we oversaw the planting of over 100,000 Native Aspen, Lodgepole Pine and a few spruce tree seedlings in the City of Red Deer in 2008 (see video), and planted over 130,000 Native Aspen trees on Alberta Conservation Association lands, at Buffalo Lake Moraine in 2007, and Hebert Lake (Buck for Wildlife), in 2008.
These plantings will directly benefit natural area parks in an urban centre and have an impact on the improvement of wildlife habitat in public conservation areas where the trees will grow.
